Pompeii was an ancient Roman city near Naples, in the Campania region of Italy. Pompeii was totally destroyed by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The city itself, along with Herculaneum and many roman villas in the surrounding area was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice . Excavation began in 1748, revealing a city frozen in time. Buildings, preserved by ashes, have survived with their original frescoes and sculpture and streets are still paved; a forgotten past has been brought to light by archaeologists . Pompeii offers the best look at what life in Rome must have been like 2000 years ago and you’ll have an entire city of well-preserved ruins to explore.
Pompeii has been a tourist destination for over 250 years.
